In this workshop, researchers from the Young Academy of Sweden and the South African Young Academy of Science will share their insights on the conditions for academic freedom in the two countries. Through a selection of key themes of significance for academic freedom, such as research funding and organization, academic careers and tenure track, cultures of censorship, research assessment and notions of excellence, an introductory panel will start up the discussion by providing in-depth insights into the conditions for research independence in the respective countries, the overlaps and differences, and emergent trends, from the perspective of young researchers.
