Teachers around the kwaDlangezwa area, in Kwazulu-Natal , South Africa and University of Zululand graduates took it upon themselves to try to help students in the kwaDlangezwa area with reading and writing of the English language after realizing that the English pass rate had been steadily declining. This effort has improved the students' learning over time and proven to be successful. The proposal of the career guidance, mentorship, and English tutoring initiative resulted from ongoing interactions with community partners (high schools in the surrounding rural area of kwaDlangezwa), which revealed that there was still a persistent problem with learners' career choices or a lack of knowledge regarding career choices.
Studies and observations have demonstrated that a considerable percentage of students leave universities, especially the University of Zululand. One of the causes of this is that students initially enroll in courses without having a thorough grasp of these career options (Fakude, 2012). With the right mentoring and career assistance, students would be able to select courses that best suit their post-matriculating goals, lowering the dropout rate among other things. Additionally, English tutoring can help students improve their language skills, which will be helpful when they enroll in university.
